Balikesir

The province of Balikesir is famous for its lush natural forests, history, and cuisine and is located between Canakkale and Bursa on the Turkish map, to the southwest of Istanbul. Once known in Homers Iliad as “Ida”, the Turkish name derives from the word “Balik” which means fish. This holiday destination is ideal for relaxing at the beach, taking part in water sports, trekking and camping in the wilderness and trying delicious Turkish food. The reference to fish in the name is due to the abundant marine resources from the sea of Marmara to the north and the Aegean to the west. Also located in Balikesir is the coastal city of Bandirma which offers beautiful beaches.
