Naxos Island

Naxos is the neighbouring island of Paros being only 8Km (5 miles) apart. It is famous for its temple ruins dating back to 530 BCE and Mt. Zeus. The temple ruins are located on the island Palatia which was one a hill on Naxos, however, due to the rise in water levels over time, it is now another island. The two are now connected with a walkway. The temple was actually never finished due to the ruler being overthrown 24 years after construction was started. All that stands now of the temple is the 8 m (26 ft) high, 80-tonne doorway. The famous Mt. Zeus is the highest peak on the island at 1003m. In Greek mythology, Zeus is the god of the sky and is the ruler of 11 other gods. It is said that Zeus was born in a cave on the north-western side of the mountain. Naxos is a great place to hike and explore the history, or if that’s not your scene it also has some fantastic beaches to relax.
